#FightsWorthFighting Fight for Food

For Ruairi Robertson, food is the key to global public health. His research is uncovering the role our gut microbes play in physical and mental health. In doing so he is redefining the relationship between our belly and brain.

Biography

As a nutritionist, microbiologist and neuroscientist, Ruairi is passionate about the link between our bellies and brains. Currently he is a PhD student in University College Cork and Teagasc Food Research Centre (Ireland) and visiting Fulbright scholar at Harvard University. Ruairi’s research is highlighting the role of human gut bacteria in our physical and mental health.

The human gut microbiome (the microbes in the human gut) is a recently discovered ‘hidden organ’ which plays a crucial role in human health and disease. Only in recent years have scientists discovered the incredible control that this microbial organ has over our health, from our weight, to cholesterol levels, even to brain health. However, through modern lifestyles and medical practices, such as westernised diets, c-sections and overuse of antibiotics, we have begun to wage war on our microbial friends. By altering and destroying our microbiomes we have primed ourselves for modern plagues of obesity, asthma, diabetes and even mental illness. In this talk, Ruairi will give some food for thought about the incredible relationship between our belly and brain and between microbe and man. More importantly, discover how we need to change our approach to food and health so that we can restore our relationship with our microbes to benefit physical and mental health, globally.

What is TEDx? In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxFulbright SantaMonica, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxFulbright SantaMonica event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED.
